Don’t look now, but US renewable energy is growing rapidly, inspiring support for 100% transition legislation in Congress, and soon powering UK homes thanks to IKEA.
Analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance found that renewable energy sources now account for 18% of the US’s energy generation, up from 15% last year. If current growth rates hold, renewable energy will overtake nuclear power this year to become the third largest energy source in the country.

US Representative from Hawaii Tulsi Gabbard’s Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act has picked up momentum, gaining 28 Congressional cosponsors and over 400 endorsements from advocacy organizations since its introduction. The bill is modeled on Gabbard’s home state’s progress and provides a framework to replace fossil fuels with 100% clean energy by 2035.

IKEA is adding clean energy to its famous repertoire of furniture and meatballs. It has joined Big Clean Switch, a collective energy program, to offer UK households an opportunity to switch to renewable-powered home electricity. Big Clean Switch negotiates pricing with green suppliers and will open signups to families through IKEA. The partnership estimates that an average UK household could save up to £300 ($420) annually by switching to clean energy.
