What is Stronger Together: Solidarity Summer?

This year an unprecedented number of people will feel the impacts of climate-fueled extreme weather events. Millions of people have already experienced extreme heat, and the horrifying floods in Texas are a grim reminder of the costs communities are bearing. Given the additional cuts to NOAA, FEMA and other critical public services – more people and entire communities will be at risk without federal resources. We know that when extreme weather hits, it is neighbors and networks who will continue to be the main frontline responders.

During the campaign week of August 4-8, we are inviting organizations, community leaders, creators and other voices to collectively share their stories, wisdom, and resources about how communities can take care of each other and build positive policy solutions before, during, and after extreme weather strikes. There are so many focused efforts within communities, and we want to provide a national platform for many builders/innovators to be able to share their learnings, experiences and practices. Together, we can showcase the trusted solutions and deeply held values that define how we will weather the real (and figurative) storms.

As we meet this situation head on with solutions and stories that will mobilize millions to take action, we can also defend key policy wins still in place for climate disaster preparedness and response before they too are taken away.

How You Can Get Involved

AMPLIFY

The Solutions Project will release high quality videos and graphics that showcase the climate disaster resilience work of frontline communities across the U.S. We will make these assets widely available for anyone to share.

CREATE

We want to uplift the climate resilience solutions that many people are already implementing and building. We will also offer Canva templates that any participant in the week-long campaign can use/adapt to share their efforts as part of the amplification moment. You can make your own content and share online and use #SolidarityStrong

Some examples:

  • Helpful guides for communities to prepare for heatwaves, hurricanes, etc
  • Great articles or videos showcasing how your community prepares for extreme weather
  • Human-centered stories of mutual aid and solidarity
  • Rapid response funding or other resources to help communities through disasters
  • Quotes from organizers, leaders, aid workers, etc about the power of community
  • Key stats or data about climate resilience
  • Climate disaster resilience advocacy campaigns and actions

GATHER & SHARE

The Solutions Project will be curating a web page that will gather existing resources & stories from organizations around climate resilience. It will act as a hub for the climate justice movement to host the collective knowledge that has already been created. Please consider submitting any resources, stories or case studies or team has built. (We will of course be giving all organizations credit)

Why is this important?

SOLIDARITY & ACTION

We all share a responsibility to ensure each other’s safety and the protection of the planet – and showing up for others in moments of great need feels good! Now is the moment to show how we are stronger when we act together. By coming together during this particular week we can showcase hope and action, welcoming new people into the ongoing organizing for climate justice.

KNOWLEDGE SHARING

Frontline communities have already weathered through many severe political and real storms, and have important knowledge to share with others about bringing the community together and taking care of each other during disaster moments. There is so much wisdom that exists that can be exchanged to help one another prepare
